E3 2010 Summary

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Ah, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, colloquially known as E3. This is the event of the year for almost all stripes of gaming. Where else is an industry-insider-only event covered by the likes of G4tv, The Wall Street Journal and The Christian Science Monitor?

This was my second year of attending the show, and it was as intense as ever. Booth babes and costumes were in full effect, celebrities were wandering the floor and you can’t help but feel like a kid in a candy store. (I’ve included a few images below the fold in an attempt to show a snapshot of what E3 is like.)

That feeling was well justified by the sheer scope of presentation & announcements. The quick glimpse of what’s coming in the next few years is quite impressive. This list from MediaKick gives you a nice summary and trailer links to help you experience (or re-live) the pandemonium.

The big takeaways for me this year were:

  1. It’s good to be in a growing industry & online gaming is growing even faster than other segments
  2. Innovation and technology are continuing to “change the game” and are right around the corner, especially motion control and 3D.

The industry is definitely doing well, judging by the dollars spent on elaborate booths and crazy parties. Microsoft had Cirque-du-Soleil perform for the their press announcements, Activision had a concert with artists like Usher, Rihanna, Eminem & Jane’s Addiction. Also, in addition to the growing presence of online gaming publishers on the show floor, analysts have noticed that they have been underestimating the industry’s size, and that it now accounts for 25% of the overall industry revenues. This trend was reinforced with more talk around gaming-as-a-service. Onlive, one of the leaders in this space, came out of beta and officially launched as E3 wrapped up, while Sony shared an interesting announcement that Portal 2 and Steam from Valve would be available on the Playstation Network.

Consoles are nowhere near dead though, with the addition of Microsoft Kinect and Sony Move, everyone has an interesting story around motion control interfaces. Nintendo is not resting on their laurels, but launching a new wave of games on the Wii to expand beyond the causal player market. Additionally, there was a big emphasis on 3D visualization, with Sony promising to have 20 3D titles in 2011 and Nintendo introducing the handheld 3Ds with glasses-free 3D technology.

E3 always amazes and reinvigorates with the potential of what’s to come, this year was no different and it is most definitely a great time to be in the gaming industry, especially online.

Oh Canada, or why TX success rates matter

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Of late, Vindicia has been welcoming quite a few Canadian based gaming, software, and social media companies. We also work in partnership with Tier 1 payment providers like Litle and Chase Paymentech. This brings up an interesting issue as these merchants think through their business structure and monetization plans.

Visa and Mastercard rules require that for US dollar transactions be presented by a merchant as a US domestic transaction, the merchant must have a “presence” in the US. The card associations rules may seem confounding but they’re much to do about making sure that the associations comply with US regulatory requirements and so that the associations and the card issuing banks can have some confidence about the risk created by the merchant for any given transaction. This leads to a requirement that Canadian and other foreign domiciled companies have to set up a “presence” in the US. The alternative is to use a Canadian merchant account to present international transactions priced in US Dollars.

The extra effort  may seem painful, but that leads to an important consideration every company should be considering and that is the statistical likelihood that any given credit/debit card transaction will go through at any given time. One of the reasons that Vindicia has chosen to work with the very best payment providers is that, on average, those payment providers are more likely to complete a successful transaction. We often see prospective clients compare one of the top provider’s pricing to that of less capable providers and the variable most often missing in their ROI analysis that offsets their sometimes perceived higher cost is the change in revenue that an even .05% better success rate completing one time and subscription transactions creates in terms of dollars saved. When the cost of payment processing is less than 3%, it doesn’t take a lot of 97%+ transactions to offset small cost deltas between the pricing of the best in class and all the rest.

Returning to Canadian companies, analyzing the average likelihood of success of any given transaction shows that the slight extra effort is well worth it. Requests to bill a US customer from what appears to be a foreign (even just Canadian) bank will lower the statistical likelihood of each transaction that a Canadian merchant attempts as card issuers assign more risk to non domestic transactions. It takes very few incomplete transactions (from customers who wanted to buy from you!) to offset the small cost of creating a US subsidiary in a favorable US taxing area.

GDC 2010 Networking

Monday, March 1st, 2010

The Game Developer Conference (GDC to most) is coming up in just over one week. This is a well-attended industry event and the main benefit for most is the networking that extends well beyond the main conference hours. Due to this fact, the after-hours event schedule is almost overwhelming. Our marketing team had to build an event matrix just to sort it all out, and we figured it might be handy for others if the GDC mixer information was consolidated into one place.

To that end, below are the events, grouped by day and listed chronologically. If we missed some, give us the details in a comment and we’ll keep updating the list.

See you all there!
